Scripture Sentences from Zephaniah chapter 1:

For the Day of the Lord is near, the day when God will act. The great day of the Lord is near, very near and coming fast

Hymn 705: O God our Help in Ages Past
(tune: St Anne, with full verse Intro.)

1. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home;

2. Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

4. A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

6. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home!

Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

Prayers

As your family we have been given many gifts,
many talents, many opportunities,
and so we pray:

Loving God, help us - individually,
and as your people together -
to be your witnesses in the world today.
Help us to take risks and not stay in our comfort zones.
Bless us with the courage of your first disciples,
that your kingdom may come and your will be done
in this place and throughout the world.
We bring to you, gracious God, what is yours:
our thanks, our praise, our hearts, our lives.

As in our hearts we sing, as we celebrate, as we listen and as we pray,
bless each one of us with a sense of your presence
and the reassurance of your love.
You give us a magnificent world, which is full of beautiful people. You tell us to cherish our land and those in it and Lord we so often let you down. Justice, mercy and humility become empty words in our busy lives. Lives which so often crowd you out.

We are failing in our call to go into the world with the good news of the gospel.
But no matter what we do you do not fail us. You gave us Jesus, who gave his life for us and is doing so brought to us the assurance of forgiveness.

Forgive us, when we stumble on the pathway of faith. As we imagine a candle burning, relight the fire of faith within us. Waken up your church with the light of hope and Lord may we share that light with everyone.

Forgive us our unbelief and say to each one here "your sins are forgiven; go in peace" and Lord we hear also your words" Sin no more"
Help us who have been forgiven so much to love you more
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

The Lord's Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver is from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reading: 1st Thessalonians 5: 1 - 11

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 When they say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 4 But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; 5 for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6 So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; 7 for those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

Reading: Matthew 25: 14 - 30

14 "For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; 15 to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. 17 In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. 18 But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. 20 Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.' 21 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' 22 And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.' 23 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' 24 Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' 26 But his master replied, 'you wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. 29 For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 30 As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Hymn 637: The Day of the Lord shall come.
(tune: Air Falalalo, with Intro.)

1. The day of the Lord shall come, as prophets have told,
when Christ shall make all things new, no matter how old.
And some at the stars may gaze, and some at God's word,
In vain to predict the time, the Day of the Lord.

Chorus:
The desert shall spring to life, the hills shall rejoice,
The lame of the earth shall leap, the dumb shall find voice;
The lamb with the lion shall lie, and the last shall be first;
And nations for war no more shall study or thirst.

2. The Day of the Lord shall come - a thief in the night,
A curse to those in the wrong who think themselves right,
A pleasure to those in pain or with death at the door;
A true liberation for the prisoners and poor.
(Chorus)

3. The Day of the Lord shall come and judgement be known,
As nations like sheep and goats come close to the throne.
Then Christ shall himself reveal, asking all to draw near
And see in his face all faces once ignored here.
(Chorus)

4. The Day of the lord shall come, but now is the time
To subvert earth's wisdom with Christ's folly sublime,
By loving the loveless, turning the tide and the cheek,
By walking beneath the cross in step with the weak.

Chorus:
The desert shall spring to life, the hills shall rejoice,
The lame of the earth shall leap, the dumb shall find voice;
The lamb with the lion shall lie, and the last shall be first;
And nations for war no more shall study or thirst.

Sermon: The Responsibility of Talent.

In our scripture sentences from Zephaniah at the beginning of the service we are exhorted that the day of the Lord is near, near and coming quickly. Paul in Thessalonians reminds the people that the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly and in today's parable for the Kingdom season we hear how we are trusted by the king, to do something with our lives, and not just waste them. Each of us is expected to work according to our ability and talents. When the day of the Lord comes we must be ready to justify what we have done with what he has given us.

Let me tell you this short story as an illustration:
Millie was now quite old but she always had a strange attitude to gifts. If she was given a present, she would thank the person profusely and say how kind it was of them to give her a gift. She said she would treasure it. Then without unwrapping it she put it away in a drawer for another day. When a niece came to help her to move, she discovered many unused gifts, still wrapped. There were biscuits and cakes that had moulded away, there were jars of things that had long passed their sell by date, and there were clothes that now would no longer fit Millie. Drawer after drawer of gifts were put out in the bin. Because she did not use them she lost them, she never had the benefit of them

Have you come across someone like Millie, I know I have, maybe not to quite the same extent but very similar. So sad, gifts given with love to be used and in some cases shared made useless by not being used.

In today's parable we are introduced to a man who entrusts his property to his servants while he is abroad he gives them varying quantities of resources, to one he gives five talents, to another two and to another one. They are not all the same; each has different gifts. They are not equal in talent but they all need to make an effort with what they have. It is not how many talents you have but how you use them.

The servant's master is taking quite a risk, perhaps he has a flair for business himself and hopes and expect that this will have rubbed off on his servants and they will rise to the challenge he has given them.

He doesn't tell them what to do with the talents; he trusts them to use their own initiative and imagination and hopes that the trust he has placed in them will bear dividends.

When the master returns two of the slaves show a profit, however it is not about money, but about not wasting or failing to use what we are given. If we do not use our God given talents, we are in danger of losing them. I have several friends who as they grow older have become great fans of crosswords and Suduko.They make sure they tackle one at least daily and frequently, to use the phrase, "use it or lose it". I have to tackle something else to keep my brain active as crosswords just leave me frustrated. My grandchildren think I should attempt one of the many games that can be accessed online or reuse my husband's Nintendo!!

In the parable the servant who did not use his gift, lost it and was rejected by his master he had failed in his relationship with his master. it was not the lack of achievement which displeased the master but the lack of love. The servant had not wanted to do his best for his master- even if his best had been to deposit the money at the bank. Would we have acted any differently I wonder. In the parable we have already seen that the master took a risk in the trust he put in his servants. When we look at our mission are we perhaps guilty as the man with one talent of burying it. Do we try to keep things exactly as they are, resist change, become wary of any new developments and if things are fine as they are, why change them? This year change has come, unasked for, unwanted, and very unwelcome so what do we do? Are we in danger of our attitude to God's mission becoming stale, just like Millie's gifts?

In this parable, Jesus tells us that here can be no faith without risks, no faith without adventure, no faith without enterprise. Willingness to take a risk is an essential part of our faith.

Throughout this story we can imagine a God who bestows gifts on all of us-and so we are gifted. Cast your minds back to when you first used one of your gifts for God. In my case it was very simple. I was a very shy youngster but I liked people I knew. At the mission hall I attended there was a Saturday night tea meeting and I was asked to be responsible for following the teapot round with the milk jug and sugar basin. Not much risk there you might say, but I liked to keep in the background, I was afraid of spilling the milk, of tipping out the sugar and of having to speak to people I didn't know. I did it, not very happily at first but it got easier, from those beginnings I found I had a gift for talking to people I didn't know and guess what I eventually progressed to the teapot!

When we think of using our talents, so often we imagine we are being asked to do something far beyond our capability. God never urges us to do something we can't do. It doesn't matter what people's talents are but how they are used in his service. God is forever taking risks in entrusting us with his gifts. He has no guarantee that we will invest them wisely, but that is the risk. He dares us to share in his vision; he trusts us to do it in our own way, knowing that if we succeed both his will and ours will be done.

Because we are all unique human beings, we all have something to offer that no one else can offer-even if that offering is of our self and our time. No one is without something to offer. Yet we all know that if our gifts or talents are not used they atrophy and die or become mouldy and useless like Millie's gifts.

For talent to grow and develop we need to use it. As the extent of God's love dawns on us, and his ways of truth and love attract us more and more, so our relationship with him develops. In giving us Jesus he gave us the greatest gift of all. in giving us this great gift God expects us to make the most of all we have been given, rather than hiding our talents away. All the gifts we have been provided with can be used and enjoyed both for the encouragement of others and the building up of the Church and in the service we have been called to give to the world.

We can do anything if we are wearing the breastplate of Faith and love and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation. We must be wary of storing our talents away in a drawer until they are useless instead we must use our lives and our talents for the benefit of our King and his kingdom and strive towards hearing at the end of life's journey well done, good and faithful servant, you have been faithful with a few things, come and share your master's happiness.

Prayers of Intercession

Lord, we pray for your peace
for those who are burdened with stress and anxiety. As so many are at the moment
Come into our turmoil,
and may your presence give strength and calmness.
May your peace, which passes all understanding,
keep our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Lord we pray for your peace, for our government, for our health service, for the advisors, for those who work on vaccines and where hope . is beginning to appear
Lord we pray for your peace and your healing on all who are ill, and those who grieve for a loved one no longer here. We name before you our own particular needs and the needs of all our hearts
Lord, we pray for your peace
for those who suffer from the wounds of war, violence
and hatred.
May they/we know healing,
and be inspired by the hope of your kingdom.
Lord we pray for peace in America.
We pray for peace of mind for those feeling bitter after the presidential election.
We pray above all for justice and sincerity

Lord, we pray for your peace
for all who bear ancient grudges or bitter hatreds
Send your peace, Lord,
that we may think, act and speak harmoniously.
Take away our selfishness,
so that we can share the joys, and feel the sorrows,
of our neighbours.
May your peace, which passes all understanding,
keep our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Amen

Hymn 573: God is working his purpose out
(tune: Benson, with Intro.)

1. God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year,
God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near;
nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.

2. From utmost east to utmost west where human feet have trod,
by the voice of many messengers goes forth the voice of God,
'Give ear to me, you continents, you islands, give ear to me,
that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.'

3. What can we do to work God's work, to prosper and increase
love and justice throughout the world, the reign of the Prince of Peace?
What can we do to hasten the time, the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea?

4. Let us go out in the strength of God with the banner of Christ unfurled,
That the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world.
Sin and sorrow let us fight to set their captives free,
that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.

5. All that we do can have no worth unless God blesses the deed;
vainly we hope for the harvest-time till God awakens the seed;
yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea

Arthur Campbell Ainger (1841-1919)

The Blessing:
May you flourish as you use your gifts
May you grow in faith and wisdom.
And may 'Well done, good and faithful servant'
be your joy to hear as you work, rest and pray,
day by day.

And may the blessing of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you
and all those you love, now and forevermore, Amen
